Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Argentine Mauser Model 1909 was a bolt-action battle rifle based on the German Gewehr 98 design, specifically adapted for the Argentine Army. It was produced both in Germany and Argentina, with the majority of the rifles—around 200,000—being manufactured by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in Berlin. The Model 1909 was a slightly modified version of the Gewehr 98, with key design changes to suit Argentine specifications. Notably, the Lange Visier sight found on the Gewehr 98 was replaced by a tangent leaf sight, a modification that improved the rifle's usability. Additionally, the Model 1909 retained the ability to use the Mauser 1891 bayonet, the predecessor rifle it was intended to replace. In Argentina, local production was carried out by the Fabrica Militar de Armas Portatiles, with additional rifles being manufactured at government plants in Rosario and Santa Fe. These domestic production efforts resulted in approximately 85,000 units. The Mauser 1909 was chambered in the 7.65×53mm Mauser cartridge, a round known for its reliability and accuracy. Although the rifle was officially adopted in 1909 and served as the standard issue for the Argentine military, it did not see combat in large-scale conflicts, as it was eventually replaced by the more modern FN FAL rifles in the 1960s.
