Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FN Model 1922 pistol has a rich history linked to its development, production, and use during significant historical events. Designed at the request of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) after World War I, it addressed the urgent need for modern sidearms in a newly formed state struggling with a depleted military. The Yugoslav military initially considered the FN Models 1903 and 1910, rejecting the 1903 due to its high cost while favoring the 1910 for its affordability and compatibility with the 9mm Browning Short cartridge. However, the 1910's limitations in barrel length and magazine capacity led to requests for modifications. The redesign was assigned to FN's Bureau d'Études, which proposed enhancements that included a longer barrel (113mm compared to the 1910's 88mm), an extended frame for a larger magazine, and the addition of a lanyard ring to improve accuracy and capacity. By 1922, the design was finalized, and on February 28, 1923, the Yugoslavs ordered 60,000 pistols. The Model 1922 operates as a blowback pistol, relying on the mass of the slide and a recoil spring to keep the breech closed, ensuring ease of operation and reliability in the field.
