The Pistolet wojskowy wzór 33 (PW wz.33), marked with the distinctive “Circle 11” emblem, was Poland’s post–World War II licensed copy of the Soviet Tokarev TT-33 pistol. Manufactured by Fabryka Broni “Lucznik” in Radom, it reflected Poland’s shift to Soviet-standard weapons and ammunition after joining the Eastern Bloc. Production began around 1947, with full-scale manufacturing starting by 1948. Chambered for the 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge—a high-velocity, bottlenecked round also used in Soviet submachine guns like the PPSh-41 and PPS-43—the wz.33 was functionally identical to the TT-33. Early pistols were marked with the “FB in triangle” logo, denoting Fabryka Broni, but by approximately 1950, this was replaced by the “11 in a circle” factory code, signifying state ownership under the communist regime.

While mechanically the same as the Soviet original, the Polish wz.33 stood out for its higher manufacturing quality and cleaner machining. The pistols featured checkered black grips, usually made of hard rubber or plastic, with vertical grooves or a plain circle in place of the Soviet star. They were typically blued, and most carried a two-digit date stamp alongside Polish military inspection marks. During the 1990s, many surplus wz.33 pistols imported into the United States were fitted with aftermarket external safeties to comply with import laws—modifications not present on original military-issue models.
Between 1947 and 1955, Radom produced an estimated 225,000–250,000 wz.33 pistols before the design was phased out in favor of more compact and modern sidearms such as the P-64, chambered in 9x18mm Makarov. Though based on a Soviet blueprint, the Polish wz.33 is now valued among collectors for its Cold War provenance, solid construction, and the legacy of Radom’s arms-making tradition. The Circle 11–marked wz.33 remains a notable example of Poland’s adaptation of Soviet weapons technology during the early Cold War.
