Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Fémáru, Fegyver és Gépgyár (FEG) 37M is a Hungarian service pistol developed in the late 1930s as an improved evolution of the earlier 29M. Designed primarily for military use, the 37M maintained the simple blowback operation and durable construction characteristic of Rudolf Frommer’s designs while offering more modern ergonomics and mechanical refinements. Chambered in .380 ACP (9mm Browning Short) for Hungarian military contracts and .32 ACP (7.65mm)for German wartime contracts, the pistol displayed a high standard of machining and finish unusual for mass-produced sidearms of the era. Production began in 1937 and continued through World War II, with German-contract pistols marked “Pistole M.37 (Ung.)” and featuring a manual safety added at German request. Historically, the 37M served as one of Hungary’s principal military pistols during the war, valued for its reliability, sturdy steel construction, and ease of maintenance. German use during the early and mid-war years further boosted its presence across Europe. After 1945, surviving examples circulated widely as surplus, and the model developed a steady collector following due to its wartime variations, contract markings, and high build quality relative to many contemporary service pistols. Today the FEG 37M stands as a representative example of pre- and mid-war Hungarian arms development, appreciated for its mechanical simplicity, strong production history, and the distinct differences between Hungarian- and German-ordered configurations.
