Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Garate, Anitua y Compañía (often abbreviated GAC) was an Eibar-based Spanish firearms manufacturer founded in the late 19th century that produced a variety of small arms, including double-action revolvers, automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns, as well as bicycles and later mopeds after it exited the arms business. The firm was part of the Eibar arms industry cluster, where many workshops made commercial and export firearms, often patterned after popular foreign designs. Spanish patent law at the time allowed such firms to produce copies of British and American mechanisms domestically, which is why many revolvers from Eibar—including those by Garate Anitua—followed familiar Smith & Wesson or Colt style layouts rather than having widely advertised proprietary model names. While some military contracts from Eibar firms did carry specific service designations, like the British World War I “Old Pattern, No.1 Mark I” by GAC in .455 Webley, most commercial export revolvers were identified simply by the manufacturer, caliber, and chambering markings rather than a formal factory model number.
