Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Merkel brothers started manufacturing rifles and shotguns in Suhl, Germany, back in 1898. Their company is renowned for crafting high-quality over/under and side-by-side shotguns, double-barreled express rifles, drillings with various rifle/shotgun combinations, falling block single-shot rifles, and bolt-action rifles. Experts often praise Merkel's guns as being of equal quality to some of the most reputable Italian and English guns. However, due to the company's extensive and complicated history, which includes periods of operation behind the Iron Curtain, there are many un-cataloged models that one may come across.
This example is a Merkel Model 201E Scalloped Boxlock Over Under Shotgun. The barrels retain the original rust-blue finish, and the coin-finished scalloped frame features attractive game scene engravings on the sides of five ducks landing in a pond on the right and seven pheasants in the grass on the left, with foliate scroll and geometric patterns on the top lever and floorplate. The checkered pistol grip walnut stock and forend are in excellent condition w and feature a left side shadowline cheekpiece, sling swivels on the toeline and the lower barrel forward of the forend tip, and an “Mg” intertwined logo checkered buttplate. The left side of the barrels is marked “GEBRÜDER MERKEL / SUHL,” the right side is marked "SUHLER WAFFENWERK," and the barrels and forend are numbered to the shotgun. The shotgun locks up tight with the lever coming to rest left of center, and features double triggers, ejectors, cocking indicators, and is sighted with a lone white bead. Overall, it is a lovely engraved Merkel that should perform well.
