The Merkel brothers started manufacturing rifles and shotguns in Suhl, Germany, back in 1898. Their company is renowned for crafting high-quality over/under and side-by-side shotguns, double-barreled express rifles, drillings with various rifle/shotgun combinations, falling block single-shot rifles, and bolt-action rifles. Experts often praise Merkel's guns as being of equal quality to some of the most reputable Italian and English guns. However, due to the company's extensive and complicated history, which includes periods of operation behind the Iron Curtain, there are many un-cataloged models that one may come across.

This is a 1969 Merkel Model 211E Combination Gun with an extra set of factory 12 Ga. barrels and a Mounted Schmidt & Bender Hubertus 6x42/49 Scope (Numbered 5289). It was imported by MDW Guns in Waterford, ME. The Merkel features a 25.5" combination barrel set with a 12 gauge shotgun barrel over a 7x57R caliber rifle barrel. The 7x57R is a rimmed version of the rimless 7x57 Mauser and is mostly used in European combination guns. The Combination barrels are fitted with a Schmidt & Bender Hubertus 6x42/49 Scope (Numbered 5289) attached with factory claw mounts. The second set of barrels is 28" long and 12 gauge. This rig features hand-engraved scenes of red stag and roe deer on the left side of the receiver, and ducks on the right. The Continental style stock is made of dark European Walnut and features a Germanic cheekpiece and point pattern checkering. This versatile and classy outfit would be a great addition to any collection.
