Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Artillery Luger, officially designated the Lange Pistole 08 (LP08), was a specialized variant of the German P08 Luger pistol—formally approved by Kaiser Wilhelm II on July 2, 1913, for use by field artillery units and flight crews. Built with a longer barrel, it featured an eight-position tangent rear sight calibrated out to 800 meters. As the sight was elevated, it shifted slightly to the left via an internal cam to help compensate for the lateral drift caused by the right-hand spin of the 9mm bullet. To convert the pistol into a compact carbine, it came with a detachable wooden board-type shoulder stock, which also served as a holster. The stock attached quickly to a metal lug on the heel of the grip frame. Initially issued to artillery crews who needed a more maneuverable personal weapon than standard rifles, the LP08 also saw service with Stoßtruppen (stormtrooper assault units) during trench assaults. It was likewise used by early military aviators before fixed, synchronized machine guns became standard on aircraft. The LP08 used the standard 8-round box magazine, but it could also accept the Trommelmagazin 08, a distinctive 32-round snail drum magazine. While increasing sustained fire, the drum required a special loading tool and was prone to jamming if improperly handled.

Production began in 1913, with the bulk manufactured by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and the Imperial Arsenal at Erfurt. By the end of World War I in 1918, approximately 175,000 units had been produced. Although official production ceased after the Armistice, surplus parts and barrels were later assembled into commercial export models into the early 1930s. Today, surviving LP08 pistols—especially those with original adjustable sights, matching-number stocks, and intact drum magazines—are highly sought after by collectors. They stand as notable examples of a military sidearm purpose-built to function as a support weapon within German doctrine during the First World War.
