Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
One of the unique features of the Glock 17 Gen 1 is its polymer frame. This made it an unconventional offering at the time, but it was this very attribute that set it apart from other firearms. The lightweight frame, combined with a robust and reliable internal mechanism, made for a handgun that could withstand heavy use while minimizing weight. The gun's 17-round magazine capacity was also groundbreaking at the time, significantly exceeding the capacity of many other service pistols. This enhanced its appeal to law enforcement and military units around the world.
The first generation of Glock pistols, commonly referred to as Gen 1, can be identified by their smooth "pebble finish" grip, and frames without finger grooves. Gen 1 frames were used by Glock between 1982 and 1988 before the checkered grip patterns were introduced in the second generation. The first Glock 17s to be imported into the US were serialized with an alpha-numeric code, consisting of two letters followed by three numbers. This code was stamped into the slide and barrel, and a small metal plate was inserted into the bottom of the polymer frame. The first documented Glock 17s imported into the US, identified by their serial numbers, belonged to the AF000 series in January 1986. This was followed by AH000, AK000, and AL000. The early Glock (Gen 1) pistols, identified by serial number prefix AF through AM, were manufactured with barrels that had a smaller overall diameter and thinner bore walls, known as "pencil barrels". These early Glock 17 "pencil barrel" pistols are considered rare and highly desirable by Glock collectors. Later, the barrels were redesigned with thicker bore walls as the manufacturing process evolved, and the design of Glock pistols improved over time.
The first-generation Glocks were often packaged and sold in plastic boxes that became iconic and were referred to as "Tupperware" style boxes. The original boxes had compartments for storing ammunition, which could hold up to 17 rounds of 9mm along with the pistol. However, Glock later modified this design to comply with BATF import regulations, and the ammunition storage compartments were removed.
