The "22 Special" underwent several notable variations throughout its production run. The first variation (1926-28) was chambered for seven rounds of .22 LR, .22 Long, and .22 Short cartridges and featured two-piece walnut grips with a distinctive hump at the top. The second variation (late 1928-29) saw a chambering change to either nine rounds of .22 LR or seven rounds of .22 Winchester Rim Fire (WRF), with the latter being extremely rare, with estimates suggesting only around 200 pieces were made. By 1930, the revolver transitioned to the third variation, characterized by rounded-top walnut grips without the previous hump. The fourth variation, introduced in 1933 and continuing until 1938, featured a bird's head-shaped "RICE" grip frame with a one-piece mono grip secured by a rear bolt and a newly designed cylinder with a raised rim, known as the "H&R Safety Rim." These variations illustrate the "22 Special's" evolutionary design and its place in the history of early 20th-century revolvers.
