Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The only other major commercial contractor to produce M1 rifles after World War II—aside from International Harvester—was the Harrington & Richardson Arms Company of Worcester, Massachusetts. On April 3, 1952, H&R was awarded a contract to manufacture 100,000 M1 rifles, followed by a second order for 31,000 additional units on June 25 of the same year. Although the company had long been known for producing firearms for the civilian market, its prior military manufacturing experience was limited, most notably to the Reising .45 ACP submachine gun made under a U.S. Marine Corps contract during WWII. Despite receiving its M1 rifle contract nearly a year after International Harvester, H&R drew on its general firearms manufacturing expertise to begin deliveries around the same time. However, getting M1 production up and running was not without challenges. Early on, H&R had to source some key components, such as operating rods, bolts, and hammers, from Springfield Armory. Nevertheless, most H&R M1s were assembled using parts marked “HRA,” including the barrels.

The stocks had a distinctive contour, particularly behind the receiver, differing from those made by Springfield and IHC. Most H&R stocks also bore a 3/8-inch Defense Acceptance Stamp, though exceptions exist, especially on later rifles. H&R was originally assigned two serial number blocks: 4,660,001 to 4,800,000 and 5,488,247 to 5,793,847. In mid-1956, the company produced 400 additional rifles beyond the end of this second range and was granted a third block: 6,034,330 to 6,034,729. Unlike the often-inconsistent parts used in some IHC rifles, H&R M1s were typically more uniform in construction and finish. The company also manufactured its own barrels for most of its production run, something IHC did not do consistently. However, after International Harvester withdrew from its contract, some leftover LMR barrels were redirected to H&R and used in the final production runs.

Among collectors, H&R M1 rifles are often praised for their high standards of fit, finish, and overall craftsmanship. Production ended in May 1956, with a total of 428,600 rifles delivered. Due to the timing of their contracts and the end of active hostilities in the Korean War by 1953, it’s unlikely that many H&R or IHC rifles saw overseas deployment during the conflict. By the time these manufacturers reached full production, the immediate wartime demand had subsided, and most rifles remained stateside or were used to support foreign military aid programs.
