In 1916, Argentina ordered approximately 10,000 Colt M1911 pistols for its military, known as the Modelo 1916. Impressed by their performance, Argentina negotiated a license with Colt in the mid-1920s to produce a domestic version, designated the Sistema Colt Modelo 1927. In 1929, Spaniards Arturo Ballester and Eugenio Molina founded Hispano-Argentina Fábrica de Automóviles S.A. (HAFDASA) in Buenos Aires as a branch of Hispano-Suiza. By the mid-1930s, seeking a more economical alternative to the Sistema Colt, the Argentine military turned to HAFDASA. Engineers Rorice Rigaud and Carlos Ballester-Molina (a relative of the founders) designed a pistol inspired by the Spanish Star Model B but compatible with the Colt 1911, using the same barrel, magazine, recoil spring, and manual of arms to simplify troop training.

Adopted by the Argentine Army in 1938 as the “Ballester-Rigaud,” it was re-designated “Ballester-Molina” around 1940–1942. Unlike the Colt 1911A1, it featured an integral mainspring housing, eliminated the grip safety and slide-stop disassembly notch, and incorporated a pivoting trigger. The design proved highly successful, being adopted by the Argentine Army, Navy, police, and coast guard, and exported to countries including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
