Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Harrington & Richardson Model 65 Reising is a .22 LR blowback-operated semi-automatic rifle originally developed for the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a training rifle. Its heavy 23-inch barrel, 10-round detachable box magazine, manual bolt hold-open, and front blade with adjustable aperture rear sight, combined with a stock and weight designed to match the M1 Garand, gave trainees a realistic service-rifle experience using low-recoil ammunition. Production occurred primarily between 1943 and 1945. While some sources cite about 6,000 rifles made under the Marine contract, modern research estimates total production, including both military and civilian rifles, at roughly 18,500 units. After military contracts ended, H&R produced the Model 65 for civilian sale, and the design later evolved into the Model 165 “Leatherneck”, which featured a lighter stock and other refinements. Serial-number records do not clearly distinguish between Marine-issued rifles and the civilian examples, making exact provenance difficult to determine.
