Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Harrington & Richardson Auto-Ejecting .32 S&W (3¼", Blued) is a fascinating piece of late-19th-century revolver design that showcases both the ingenuity and the practical demands of its era. Built by H&R in Worcester, Massachusetts, this little top-break sheep-shooter uses a clever automatic ejection mechanism: when the barrel assembly is hinged open, a ramped lever inside pushes the extractor star to eject spent cases before springing back into place — a fast and elegant way to unload compared to simply swinging open and manually pushing them out. The 3.25-inch barrel makes it compact and easy to conceal, yet long enough to provide a useful sight radius, and the steel frame receives a blued finish that, while patinated on many surviving examples, still speaks to H&R’s quality workmanship. According to catalog and auction records, these Auto-Ejecting revolvers were produced in a variety of barrel lengths (including 3¼"), and in various calibers such as .32 S&W and .38 S&W. Capacity typically is six shots in .32 S&W. The design also features small hard-rubber grip panels—often with an early “Target” logo—that give the revolver a compact, practical profile without sacrificing a secure grip. Mechanically, the double-action pull is quite usable for its age, and the revolver’s old-school timing and lock-up can be surprisingly smooth given proper maintenance. Collectors prize these for their historical significance—they reflect a transitional moment when H&R embraced more sophisticated mechanisms—and for the visually pleasing combination of compact utility and mechanical ingenuity. When evaluating a used example, it’s wise to check the condition of the ejector, hinge, timing, and the state of the blued finish; properly maintained, this model remains one of H&R’s most interesting and practical antique revolvers.
