Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Top-Break Automatic Ejecting Model 1 (1885–1889) was Harrington & Richardson’s (H&R) first self-ejecting revolver. It was chambered in .32 S&W or .38 S&W and came in 5- or 6-shot configurations, with standard barrel lengths around 3 1/4 inches. The revolver featured nickel plating and hard rubber grip panels molded with a floral motif. Built on a modified version of H&R’s earlier American Double Action frame, the Model 1’s First Variation (1885–1886) was marked only with the company name and Worcester, Massachusetts address. It used a twin guide-rod ejector system beneath the barrel rib. The Second Variation (1887–1889) added the patent date “Oct. 4, 1887” and replaced the dual guide rods with a simplified ejector mechanism. The Model 2 (1889–1896) introduced an improved and strengthened frame with a redesigned hinge and ejector system, eliminating the earlier guide rod setup entirely.

Like its predecessor, it was offered in .32 or .38 S&W with 5- or 6-shot cylinders and available barrel lengths ranging from approximately 2 1/2 to 6 inches. Grips were typically hard rubber with the H&R “Target” logo. Barrel markings included multiple patent dates: Oct. 4, 1887; May 14, 1889; and Aug. 6, 1889, reflecting continued refinements. The Model 3 (1896–1940) represented H&R’s first top-break revolver specifically strengthened for smokeless powder cartridges. It featured a sturdier frame, revised hinge screw, and more robust internal components. Offered in .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, and .38 S&W, it retained the 5- or 6-shot cylinder options.

Early examples were marked with several patent dates (e.g., May 14, 1889; April 2, 1895; April 7, 1896), while later production simplified markings to show only the caliber on the left side of the barrel—a reliable indicator of smokeless-era manufacture. Together, Models 1, 2, and 3 illustrate the evolutionary development of H&R’s top-break revolvers: from early black powder pocket pistols to rugged, smokeless-capable handguns. These revolvers offered affordable, dependable firepower to America’s working class for over five decades.
