Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Harrington & Richardson Arms Co. Model 1908 is a top-lever, break-action shotgun that was produced over a span of more than three decades, from 1909 to 1942. It was originally chambered in 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28 gauge, with the .410 bore being introduced later in 1925. This shotgun features a robust case-hardened frame, complemented by a walnut pistol grip stock and matching forend, as well as a hard rubber buttplate for durability and comfort. Designed for ease of maintenance and handling, it incorporates a three-piece takedown design with a non-removable hinge pin and a non-adjustable barrel lock. Barrel lengths were offered in 26, 28, 30, or 32 inches, while the overall weight ranged from 5 3/4 to 6 3/8 pounds, depending on the specific configuration. Over the course of its production, the Model 1908 was produced in four main variations. The first, produced from 1909 to 1921, featured a 2 1/2-inch chamber and a short forearm. The second, produced from 1922 to 1930, had a slightly longer 2 3/4-inch chamber and a slim, elongated forearm.

Finally, the fourth variation, produced from 1931 to 1942 and known as the No. 8 Standard, featured a wider forearm and the word “STANDARD” marked on the left side of the frame. In addition to its standard branding, the Model 1908 was also offered under various store brand names through mail-order catalogs, making it widely available to American shooters of the era.
