Heckler & Koch (H&K) expanded into the civilian firearms market with sporterized versions of their HK-91 rifle, aiming to diversify their product offerings. The result was the SL-6 and SL-7 rifles, designed to cater to civilian shooters while retaining some military-inspired features. The SL-6 was chambered for the 5.56mm NATO cartridge, while the SL-7 utilized the more powerful 7.62mm NATO round. These rifles integrated a blend of civilian and military characteristics: civilian features included smaller capacity magazines (3- and 10-round options), sporting-style wooden stocks, and precision triggers. On the military side, they retained sling attachments and iron sights akin to the HK-91. Despite limited availability and higher pricing in the US market, the H&K SL-6 and SL-7 rifles gained recognition for their exceptional quality and performance. Unlike its military counterparts, the SL7 features a rearward-positioned cocking handle on the right side, incorporating a specialized camming system. This innovation effectively addresses initial friction challenges posed by the "bolt head locking lever" anti-bounce mechanism, ensuring smooth operation and reliability. Despite its acclaim, production of the SL7 has ceased, making way for its successor, the Heckler & Koch SLB 2000, which continues to uphold the legacy of quality and performance set by its predecessor in the realm of sporting firearms.
