This is a rare example of an original H&K SP89 semi-automatic pistol that was produced on a limited basis as a semi-automatic only version of the MP5K.

The HK SP89 is a large frame pistol especially suited for sporting use. Its inherent accuracy makes it an excellent choice for target shooting and small-game hunting. This low recoil pistol uses the proven delayed roller locked bolt system common to many HK firearms. Simple, reliable, and accurate, the SP89 mounted with a Vortex Sparc AR Red Dot sight is the ideal home security arm.
The SP89 was HK's first attempt to build and sell a civilian version of the MP5K. Released in 1989, at a time when the political climate in the US was growing increasingly hostile to firearms with "military" appearance, the SP89 was imported until late 1993. About 15,000 arrived in the US before importation was halted by an Aug 1993 memo (attached below) from the President to the Secretary of Treasury (then parent agency of the BATF). The gun’s demise was further cemented when in Nov 1993 the Federal Assault Weapons Ban passed in both the House and Senate, then signed into law in Sep 1994.
