Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The High Standard DM-101 is a compact, hammerless derringer chambered in .22 Magnum, introduced by the High Standard Manufacturing Company of Hamden, Connecticut. Evolving from the earlier D-100 series, which debuted in .22 Long Rifle, the DM-101 represented the next generation of High Standard derringers and was designed primarily as a discreet self-defense or backup pistol, widely favored by both law enforcement officers and civilians. It featured a double-action-only trigger system with a rotating striker, eliminating the need for an external hammer and enabling a smooth, snag-free draw. With a 3 1/2-inch over-and-under barrel, top-break action, and a weight of just 11 ounces, the pistol was highly concealable and practical. The barrels were fixed and rifled, with simple machined sights on the top rib. Finishes included blue, nickel, silver, and even gold-plated options, often paired with black plastic or faux ivory grips for a distinctive look. The alternating firing mechanism engaged a different barrel with each pull of the trigger. While the trigger pull was heavy, the system was rugged and reliable.

Production continued until 1984, after which the design and tooling were acquired by American Derringer, who carried the concept forward in larger calibers. High Standard derringers are commonly divided into three marking types, each reflecting a different production era and subtle design changes. Type 1 markings, found on early models manufactured from about 1962 to 1967, are marked "HI-STANDARD" / "DERRINGER" and feature the Eagle logo on the left side of the barrel. These were designated D-100 for the .22 Long Rifle and DM-101 for the .22 Magnum. Produced in Hamden, Connecticut, these early examples are often prized by collectors for their quality and distinctive styling. Type 2 markings, used between approximately 1967 and 1970, retained the "HI-STANDARD" / "DERRINGER" label but replaced the Eagle with the Trigger logo.

The .22 Long Rifle models initially continued with the D-100 designation, though around 1969, they were updated to D-101 to align with the Magnum’s DM-101 marking. Finally, Type 3 markings, seen from roughly 1970 until the end of production in 1984, dropped the "HI-STANDARD" name entirely. These pistols were marked simply "DERRINGER", with no logo, and continued using D-101 for .22 LR and DM-101 for .22 Magnum. With its robust construction, unique design, and role as a refined American pocket pistol, the DM-101 remains one of the most historically significant derringers of the 20th century.
