Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing Company was founded in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1868 by Charles W. Allen and the Hopkins brothers. Initially, the company produced affordable percussion and cartridge revolvers, quickly gaining a reputation for reliable, mass-produced firearms. In the 1870s, after acquiring Bay State Arms, Hopkins & Allen expanded its product line to include shotguns and rifles. A significant chapter in the company’s history began in the mid-1870s when Merwin, Hulbert & Co.—a New York-based firearms dealer—acquired approximately half ownership of Hopkins & Allen and became their exclusive sales agent. This partnership brought increased design influence and quality control, with many firearms from this era bearing both the Merwin, Hulbert name and Hopkins & Allen’s mark.
This dual branding elevated the firearms’ market prestige despite their modest construction. Following the death of Joseph Merwin in 1888, Merwin, Hulbert & Co. faced financial difficulties, leading to bankruptcy in 1894 and liquidation by 1896. They owed Hopkins & Allen a substantial debt, reportedly around $90,000, which severely impacted the manufacturer’s finances. Hopkins & Allen itself declared bankruptcy in 1898 but eventually recovered and continued operations. From the late 1880s onward, Hopkins & Allen introduced a series of falling-block, single-shot rifles, primarily chambered in .22, .25, and .32 rimfire calibers.

These rifles, often featuring external hammers, octagonal or round barrels, and simple walnut stocks, were marketed mainly to young shooters and families as affordable, dependable training firearms. Models like the No. 722 “Junior” rifle exemplify this line. Firearms from the Merwin, Hulbert partnership period often bear the inscription: “Made by the Hopkins & Allen Mfg. Co., Merwin, Hulbert & Co., Sole Agents,” making them especially collectible today.
