Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Hopkins & Allen falling-block single-shot shotgun is a fascinating and relatively uncommon example of late 19th-century American firearms manufacturing. Before 1870, Hopkins & Allen (H&A) was already producing rimfire cartridge guns and would go on to manufacture a wide array of centerfire handguns and long guns. Prior to 1896, their firearms were typically marked “HOPKINS & ALLEN MANUFG. CO. NORWICH CONN.” or sometimes sold under private trade names, including Merwin, Hulbert & Company. The falling-block shotgun, introduced circa 1887 and produced into the early 1900s, represented one of the company’s more mechanically sophisticated designs. These single-shot shotguns used a vertically sliding breechblock actuated by a lever—a strong, reliable action uncommon in shotguns of the period. They were produced in most common gauges, with 12-gauge models built on heavy frames and 16- and 20-gauge versions sharing a medium frame. Prior to 1902, some were even chambered for .45-70 shotshells.

From the 1890s through 1914, smaller-caliber shotguns in .38XL and .44XL were occasionally produced on the compact Junior frame. After 1902, H&A began offering “tip-over” single-shot shotguns based on Forehand and later Davenport designs. Despite their modest marketing, Hopkins & Allen firearms—especially the falling-block models—are appreciated today by collectors for their rugged construction, unique mechanics, and the company’s broader role in the evolution of American gunmaking.
