In 1913, the Hunter Arms Company revamped its entire line of L.C. Smith shotguns, replacing the previous combination of numbers and names for grades with simpler names such as “FIELD,” “Ideal,” “Specialty,” and others. This change marked a shift in how the company classified and marketed its firearms, with the grade clearly stamped on the water table of the receiver and often on the top of the right barrel. The engraving and finishing of the receiver, lock plates, and barrels varied across different grades, with higher-end models featuring more intricate designs and finishes. The company continued producing hammer shotguns, including the "F" and "FF" grades, until 1934, with these models showcasing Royal Steel or Damascus barrels, although the "F" and "FF" grades were never marked as such. From 1919 onward, only Royal Steel barrels were used, and Hunter Arms also manufactured other models like the Fulton and Hunter Special, which were more affordable box-lock shotguns. The Hunter Special, introduced in 1937, targeted the lower-end market with a retail price of $30, offering a more budget-friendly option compared to the L.C. Smith series.

The L.C. Smith Field Grade, produced from 1912 to 1950, was the entry-level model in the line but still offered solid performance and durability. According to the 1913 catalog, the Field Grade was designed as a low-cost, sound, and plainly finished weapon, ideal for rough field or marsh conditions, with performance comparable to higher-grade models. This grade accounted for 82% of L.C. Smith's total production during the 1912-1950 period, with a total of 199,384 units manufactured. Available in 12, 16, 20 gauge, and later .410, the Field Grade featured Armor Steel barrels and various stock options, such as American walnut with different grip styles. The gun's simple, reliable design made it popular for practical use, and despite its low cost—priced at $25 in 1913—the Field Grade maintained high shooting performance. The price for upgraded versions with features like a Hunter-One Trigger or ejectors ranged from $35 to $55. Over the years, the Field Grade underwent improvements, including stronger stocks and reshaped forends, and by 1945, the price had risen to $65. The shotgun remained popular for its affordability and reliability, contributing significantly to the L.C. Smith legacy.
