Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Hunter Arms Company and later the L.C. Smith Gun Company represent an important chapter in American shotgun history, particularly with their production of the Field Grade and related models between 1913 and 1950. In 1913, Hunter Arms restructured the entire L.C. Smith lineup, replacing the older numbering and naming system with a simplified designation based solely on grade names. The Field Grade was the entry-level offering, marketed as an affordable yet rugged double-barrel shotgun capable of standing up to heavy use in the field or marshes. Although simply finished and devoid of the elaborate engraving found on higher grades, the Field Grade was built with the same core mechanical integrity and case-hardened frames as more expensive models, ensuring dependable performance. Produced in massive numbers, this grade became the backbone of L.C. Smith’s output, accounting for over 80% of all side lock production during the era. The Hunter Arms Company also diversified its offerings with lower-cost boxlock designs like the Fulton, Fulton Special, and later Hunter Special, introduced to capture the budget market, competing against low-quality imports. These non–L.C. Smith boxlocks allowed the company to maintain profitability while preserving the L.C. Smith name for its sidelock doubles.

The L.C. Smith Field Grade in particular became one of the most iconic American doubles of the early 20th century, combining durability, versatility, and affordability in a package that appealed to sportsmen of all backgrounds. Produced from 1912 to 1950, it was offered in 12, 16, and 20 gauge, with .410 added later, and buyers could choose from various barrel lengths, chokes, and stock configurations. Prices began at $25 in 1913, with options like ejectors and the innovative Hunter One-Trigger increasing the cost for those who wanted additional refinements. By 1939, improvements were introduced to strengthen the stock, refine the cocking mechanism, and reshape the forend, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to modernize even its most basic model. Production totals exceeded 199,000 units, with the majority in 12 gauge, but also significant numbers in 16 and 20 gauge, making them a common but highly respected choice for American hunters. Today, these guns are celebrated not only as durable field companions but also as artifacts of American craftsmanship, with the Field Grade in particular representing the workingman’s side-by-side of its era, offering a direct link to both the practical and cultural history of American wingshooting.
