Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Sweden obtained a license to manufacture a variant of the FN Model 1903, chambered in 9x20?mm Browning Long, and began domestic production in 1917 at the Husqvarna Vapenfabriks factory to meet both military and civilian demand. Between 1917 and 1942, Husqvarna produced approximately 89,230 pistols. Early examples featured slide markings such as “Browning’s Patent” or “System Browning,” but this practice was discontinued after World War I at the insistence of FN, which had secured exclusive rights to use John Browning’s name for firearms marketing. Designated as the pistol m/07, it served as the standard sidearm of the Swedish military until 1940, when it was replaced by the Lahti L-35 (pistol m/40). The m/07 remained in service as a substitute standard. In the 1980s, after the Lahti pistols began suffering cracked bolts due to the use of the high-pressure 9?mm m/39B cartridge adopted in the 1960s, the older m/07 was taken out of storage and returned to service as a temporary measure. It remained in limited use until deliveries of the new Glock 17 (designated pistol m/88) were completed. In the 1930s, Husqvarna also produced military contract pistols for Colombia after FN declined to resume production.

Later, in the 1950s, many surplus Husqvarna pistols were imported into the United States. Because the 9x20?mm Browning Long cartridge was uncommon in the American market, most of these imports were rechambered for the more readily available .380 ACP (9×17?mm) cartridge. These modified pistols were typically stamped “CAL 380” to indicate the change. The combination of reliable design, robust construction, and both military and civilian history has made the Husqvarna m/1907 a respected and collectible firearm among enthusiasts and historians alike.
