Sharps rifles are a distinguished series of large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading rifles that played a significant role in 19th-century American firearms history. The original design was developed by Christian Sharps in 1848, with production beginning shortly thereafter. Manufactured by various companies over the decades, including the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, the rifles remained in production until 1881. They earned widespread acclaim for their exceptional long-range accuracy, rugged construction, and reliability under harsh conditions. One of the Sharps rifle’s most innovative features was its falling-block action, which allowed for rapid and reliable breech-loading. This mechanism, combined with a strong and simple design, made the Sharps rifle one of the most effective firearms of its time.

Initially designed for paper cartridges, the rifle was later adapted to fire metallic cartridges—a transition that many other firearm designs of the era struggled to make successfully. By 1874, Sharps rifles were offered in a wide range of calibers, including the famous .45-70 and .50-90, making them suitable for both military and civilian use, including hunting and long-range target shooting. The Sharps rifle gained particular notoriety during the American Civil War, where Union sharpshooters used it. In the years that followed, it became a favored tool among buffalo hunters and frontiersmen in the American West. Its powerful caliber and range made it ideal for hunting large game over long distances. This association with the frontier contributed to the Sharps rifle becoming a cultural icon of the American Old West.
Sharps rifles achieved further fame in the 20th century through their depiction in numerous Western films, television shows, and novels, such as Quigley Down Under (1990), which featured a custom Sharps rifle prominently. These portrayals helped cement the rifle's legendary status in popular culture. As a result, several modern firearms manufacturers, including Davide Pedersoli, Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing Company, and C. Sharps Arms, among others, now offer high-quality reproductions of original Sharps rifles, which are popular among collectors, historical reenactors, and precision shooting enthusiasts alike.
