Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Makarov pistol, also known as the Pistolet Makarova, is a semi-automatic firearm designed by Nikolai Federovich Makarov in the 1950s. The objective behind its creation was to develop a simple and reliable medium-powered pistol that could serve as a sidearm for the Soviet Forces. The Russian forces accepted the gun in 1951, the standard sidearm. Although recent advancements in firearms technology may soon replace it, the Makarov pistol has secured its place in history. There are several versions of the Russian Makarov. First, there are accurate surplus guns, recognizable by their fixed rear sight and lack non-Cyrillic markings, including "Made in Russia." Second is the Baikal and Izhmech new production Makarov. These are recognizable by their rear adjustable target sight, "Made in Russia," and Baikal markings. Another variant is the 10-round double-stack Makarov, which Izhmech also made. IMEZ is an abbreviation for Izhevskii Mechanicheskii Zavod or Izhevsk Mechanical Factory, located in the city of Izhevsk near the Ural Mountains. The factory produces various products, including Makarov and PSM pistols, shotguns, airguns, artificial pacemakers for the heart, and oil drilling equipment. Although it is a government-owned enterprise, IMEZ has the right to close its business contracts and deals without any interference from the government.

Baikal is a foreign trade organization similar to North China Industries (NORINCO). It was a governmental organization that was used to market Soviet goods abroad. However, these days, Baikal is hardly active in any trade with the US, primarily due to the "voluntary trade restrictions" imposed by Bill Clinton. Baikal used to trade not only guns and ammo but also autos, trucks, and other consumer goods. IMEZ used the grips with Baikal on them because it was the only option. Many of the Makarov pistols available in the market today are newly manufactured and have either Baikal or Izhmech markings, which indicate that they are made in Russia. The model numbers of these pistols usually start with IJ-70-18A, where "18" refers to the 9x18mm Makarov caliber, while "17" refers to the 9x17mm or .380ACP caliber. "A" denotes the standard capacity, while "H" indicates the high-capacity variant with a double-stack magazine.
