Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Indústria Nacional de Armas (INA) was a firearms manufacturer based in Brazil. It was founded in the Utinga neighborhood of Santo André in 1949. During the 1950s and 1960s, INA supplied large numbers of submachine guns to the Brazilian Armed Forces, specifically the M950 and M953 models, which were in use from 1950 to 1972. These guns were primarily used by the Brazilian Army and were the standard weapon during this period.
The first model of the INA submachine gun (M950) received criticism from the military due to its quality. The original design was changed to use .45 ACP caliber instead of the original Danish design caliber, the 9×19mm Parabellum. INA also developed two models of revolvers and a small pistol based on the Czech CZ-45. It was the first Brazilian firearms manufacturer to export products to the US arms market and achieved great success with its Tiger revolver. The Tiger revolver was exported to the US market under the same name and was based on the Smith & Wesson Model 10, using a .32 S&W Long caliber.
In 1966, INA released a new revolver model in .38 Special caliber (previously restricted to the civilian market), and later, a model in .357 Magnum. However, the latter model was never produced. With the passage of the Gun Control Act in the United States in 1968, INA had to make several adaptations to its designs to meet the new North American gun laws.
INA's operations came to an end in 1972 due to a combination of factors, including accumulating debt, a decrease in the volume of exports, the replacement of its old machine guns in the armed forces by the new Beretta M12s, and an alleged influence of the military government to close the manufacturer. INA sold its machinery and factory to Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, and the old factory was used by them until 1983. IMBEL even manufactured 9mm caliber versions of the M950.
