This is an original U.S. World War II-era flare pistol manufactured by the International Flare Signal Company, chambered in 37mm. Often referred to by collectors as the “Model 52,” this designation doesn't reflect a design year, but rather its inclusion in the International No. 52 marine distress signal kit. These flare pistols were produced for both commercial maritime use and U.S. military service during the war. Featuring a break-open action for simple operation, the pistol is constructed of cast brass and nickel-plated components, offering durability in harsh sea conditions. A lanyard ring is affixed to the grip for secure retention, especially vital in turbulent environments. Both sides of the checkered grip are embossed with raised lettering that reads: INTERNATIONAL FLARE SIGNAL CO. TIPPECANOE CITY OHIO, adding to the piece’s authenticity and character. These flare guns played a critical role in maritime survival during World War II. One can easily imagine a sailor, adrift in a life raft after their ship was struck by a German U-Boat, relying on this very tool to signal for rescue.
