Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During World War II, the M1 Garand earned a reputation as one of the most advanced and effective standard-issue service rifles, offering reliable semi-automatic firepower in an era dominated by bolt-action weapons. Following the war, the vast number of Garands in the U.S. military inventory led many to believe that future needs would be fully met. However, the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 proved otherwise, and demand for rifles quickly outpaced the available supply. In response, the U.S. Ordnance Department began refurbishing stored M1 rifles and reactivated production lines. Springfield Armory resumed manufacturing the Garand, but additional sources were needed to meet wartime requirements. To supplement output, the government turned to civilian industry, including the International Harvester Company (IHC), which had no prior experience producing firearms. In June 1951, IHC was awarded a contract to produce 100,000 M1 rifles at its Evansville, Indiana, plant, with initial deliveries scheduled for December 1952.

The selection of International Harvester was influenced not only by industrial capacity but also by national defense policy. During the early Cold War, the Department of Defense emphasized geographic dispersion of critical manufacturing to reduce vulnerability in the event of a nuclear attack. All previous M1 rifle production had been concentrated within about 60 miles of Springfield, Massachusetts, so IHC’s Indiana location provided strategic distance. IHC’s lack of firearms experience was not unprecedented. During World War II, nine of the ten prime contractors producing the M1 Carbine had never built firearms before. Like them, IHC planned to rely on subcontractors to support its rifle program.

Its assigned serial number ranges—4,400,000 to 4,660,000 and 5,000,501 to 5,278,245—mark the company’s contribution to Garand production. To further bolster supply, a separate contract was awarded to the Harrington & Richardson Arms Company on April 3, 1952, also for 100,000 rifles, with additional orders to follow. Together, these manufacturers helped ensure that U.S. forces had the weapons needed to meet the demands of combat in Korea and beyond.
