Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca Gun Company X5 Lightning (Model X5-C) was a semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle introduced in December 1957 and produced until April 1963, which was later replaced by the improved X-15 Lightning. It was Ithaca’s first production rimfire autoloading rifle built with a steel receiver, reflecting the company’s emphasis on durability and quality. The X5-C utilized a detachable box magazine and accounted for the majority of production, with approximately 13,000 rifles manufactured. Serial numbers began at 1A, with the first example produced in December 1957; serial number 1A is preserved today in the NRA National Firearms Museum. Production concluded at approximately serial number 19600A. In 1959, Ithaca introduced a tubular-magazine variant designated the X5-T, which shared the same serial number range. Today, the X5 Lightning is regarded by collectors as a well-made and relatively scarce Ithaca rimfire, valued for its limited production and its role as the foundation of Ithaca’s later Lightning-series semi-automatic rifles.
