Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca Gun Company Model 49 is a lever-operated .22 caliber rimfire rifle introduced in 1961 and produced until 1978. Despite its lever-action appearance, the standard Model 49 is not a repeating rifle, but a single-shot “saddlegun” that uses a lever-operated falling-block (Martini-type) action, with cartridges manually loaded directly into the chamber. It was offered in .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle, and was also produced in a .22 Magnum variant, which is less commonly encountered today. The rifle features a hardwood stock, fixed barrel, and a tubular magazine that is non-functional and cosmetic only on the standard model. Designed as a simple, safe, and inexpensive firearm, the Model 49 was often marketed toward youth and beginner shooters. Ithaca also produced a true repeating version known as the Model 49R, which incorporated a functional tubular magazine. Today, the Model 49 is recognized for its unique operating system, distinctive lever-action styling, and place in mid-20th-century American rimfire production, making it a notable and collectible Ithaca firearm.
