Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
For over a century, Iver Johnson was a prominent manufacturer of revolvers, capturing a significant portion of the lower- to mid-priced market. Operating from assembly lines in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Arkansas, the company produced a wide range of models, from basic spur-trigger pocket pistols to full-sized double-action revolvers with fit, finish, and features that could compete with more expensive brands. Public opinion varied: some viewed the "Owlheads"—named for their distinctive grip embellishments—as merely cheap, marginal firearms, while others valued them as a cost-effective alternative that was both reliable and well-built.

Among Iver Johnson’s finest creations was the Supershot Sealed Eight, a large-frame, top-break .22 rimfire revolver produced in three stages from 1932 to 1958. It emulated the look of more expensive revolvers with its sleek lines and blued finish, and it boasted the weight and balance of a high-end match gun. The gun featured an oval-shaped, single-piece "Hi-Hold" walnut grip that enhanced both its appearance and handling. Sealed Eight grips typically had a diamond-pattern checkering on the backstrap and were secured to the frame with a single screw through the butt.

The name "Sealed Eight" referred to a distinctive safety feature: the cylinder's eight chambers were counterbored, providing protection against ruptured case heads. The internal surfaces were machined to accommodate the star extractor flush with the cylinder face. Although variants with 2½- and 4-inch barrels were produced briefly, the most common Sealed Eight models came with a 6-inch barrel. This longer barrel brought the overall length to 10¾ inches and the weight to 24 ounces, enhancing the gun’s stability and making it easier for shooters to maintain a steady aim.
