Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works underwent significant transformations from its inception to its eventual cessation in 1993. Established as Iver Johnson’s Arms in the late 19th century, the company rebranded to Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works in 1891 after relocating to Fitchburg, Massachusetts. This move aimed to capitalize on larger manufacturing facilities and attracted skilled immigrant machinists and designers, such as O.F. Mossberg and Andrew Fyrberg. Their contributions included innovative features like the top-latching strap mechanism and the Hammer-the-Hammer transfer bar safety system, which were integral to the company's popular line of top-break safety revolvers.

The death of Iver Johnson in 1895 marked a new era for the company, with his sons Frederick, John Lovell, and Walter Olof assuming control. Their involvement varied from active executive leadership to minimal participation, but collectively they guided the company through a period of expansion. Initially focused on bicycles, the company transitioned to motorcycle manufacturing before refocusing on firearms. This shift was driven by increasing demand for firearms, the expansion of the armaments industry during World War I, and a strategic move to divest from non-firearms operations. The company eventually adapted to the growing firearms market by restructuring to focus solely on firearms.
As the company's focus sharpened on firearms, it continued to evolve through changing ownership and multiple relocations. After World War II, the introduction of new firearms slowed, with the company's fortunes increasingly tied to the sales of older revolvers and single-barrel shotguns. Without significant research and development, most updates were cosmetic rather than substantive. The company relocated first to New Jersey in 1971 and then to Jacksonville, Arkansas, where it was jointly owned by Lynn Lloyd and Lou Imperato, who also owned the Henry brand.
By 1993, Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works ceased operations under its own name when it was acquired by American Military Arms Corporation (AMAC). Throughout its history, the company produced notable firearms models, including the Safety Automatic Hammerless with its various iterations: the First Model (1895–1896) with a single post latch, the Second Model (1897–1908) with a safety lever added to the face of the trigger, and the Third Model (1909–1941), also known as the "New Model," which featured adaptations for smokeless powder and lacked a safety lever on the trigger. The evolution of Iver Johnson’s Arms & Cycle Works reflects a company that adeptly navigated industry changes but ultimately succumbed to the pressures of modern firearms manufacturing and market demands.
