Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Champion is a long-running line of single-shot, break-open shotguns valued for its rugged, practical design and versatility in small-game hunting and field use. Early Champions included top-lever and side-lever designs such as the Top Snap, Side Snap, and semi-hammerless models, often featuring imported Belgian steel barrels and American walnut stocks. The Champion Model 36 (1909–1922) became a standardized variant, featuring a top-lever break-action, rebounding center-mounted hammer, extractors or ejectors, full choke, and a one-piece forged barrel and lug, offered in gauges ranging from 10 to .410 bore. Smaller variants included the Champion Model 36 Junior, with shortened stock and barrels for younger or smaller shooters, while the Champion Model 39 (1909–1916) was built on a smaller frame and available in 24, 28, .410, and even .44 caliber. Around 1923, the line evolved into the Champion Single Barrel, which retained the same reliable break-action design across all gauges and continued production until roughly 1978, with some examples exported to Canada.
