The Paratrooper variant differs from the standard Military Carbine primarily in its collapsible stock, a design inherited from Plainfield Machine when Iver Johnson acquired the company. While the Paratrooper M1 was initially featured in Iver Johnson's brochures after their move to Jacksonville, AR, in 1983, very few were actually produced before the model was discontinued in 1984. The investment-cast receiver, slide, bolt, and trigger housing ensured durability, but the later-production walnut stocks were prone to cracking, a problem not seen in the earlier Plainfield Machine models. While the semi-automatic version was the primary offering, a select-fire variant was marketed to law enforcement and foreign governments, sometimes featuring a shortened 12-inch barrel instead of the standard 18-inch version. The Plainfield Paratrooper M1 remains a sought-after collectible, representing a unique chapter in the evolution of the classic M1 Carbine design.
