Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Iver Johnson Special Trap was a premium variant of the company’s single-barrel shotguns, introduced in the late 1920s and produced into the early 1940s. Built on the same basic action as the Iver Johnson Champion but refined for dedicated trap shooting, the Special Trap featured a 32-inch full-choke barrel, a full-length ventilated rib, and dual Lyman ivory beads—features rarely seen on an exposed-hammer trap gun of the smokeless era. Though based on the Champion platform, the Special Trap was better fitted and finished, with a blue frame, hand-checkered American walnut stock and forend, and a factory ejector that distinguished it from more economical models. These details gave the gun a noticeably more refined appearance and feel compared to typical single-shot field guns of the period. Today, collectors regard the Special Trap as an uncommon and well-made single-barrel trap shotgun, appreciated for its distinctive configuration, its period styling, and the way its combination of features allows it to stand out from the more utilitarian hammer guns commonly associated with the era.
