Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J.C. Higgins Model 583.10 is a vintage 12-gauge bolt-action shotgun manufactured by High Standard and sold under the Sears, Roebuck & Co. brand during the post–World War II era. Chambered for 2¾" shells, this model features a 28-inch blued barrel with a full choke bore, designed to deliver tight shot patterns ideal for upland game, waterfowl, or trap shooting. The bolt-action design—unusual for shotguns—offers a rugged, reliable cycling system, fed by a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel. While slower than pump or semi-auto models, the bolt-action gives the shooter deliberate control and added safety, making it a popular choice among hunters and field shooters of its time. This example sports a gold bead front sight for quick target acquisition, mounted on a plain barrel with no rib. The smooth hardwood stock has a classic, no-frills design with a semi-pistol grip, providing both comfort and a traditional appearance. The metal parts retain a blue finish, typical of firearms from this era, with standard Sears/J.C. Higgins roll marks along the receiver. While the 583.10 was offered at an affordable price through Sears catalogs, it remains respected for its durable construction and consistent performance in the field. Despite its modest origins, the Model 583.10 holds a unique place in mid-century American firearms history as a functional, utilitarian shotgun that bridged affordability and dependable performance.
