The Stevens Arms Company was established in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts in 1864. It was well-known for producing Tip-up Pistols, Boy's Rifles, and Ideal Target and Sporting Rifles. The founder, Joshua Stevens, was a skilled toolmaker from New England who had gained experience in firearms manufacturing while working for various companies, including C. B. Allen, Eli Whitney, Samuel Colt, and Edwin Wesson. During his employment as the production superintendent for the Massachusetts Arms Co. in Chicopee Falls, he filed a successful patent claim for improvements to percussion pistols that were being produced by the company. In the year in which he founded the company that bore his name, Stevens received a patent for a tip-up pistol design. The company was founded with financial backing from W. B. Fay and James Taylor, even though J. Stevens and Company produced firearms, and its main source of income came from the manufacture and sale of machine tools. The company had a difficult start, with production carried out by fewer than 60 employees in a former Chicopee Falls grist mill. However, the company underwent an expansion in 1880, and in 1886, it changed its name to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. The Stevens "Favorite" rifle was patented in April 1894 and was included in the Stevens Catalog for the same year. It quickly gained popularity and became one of the most beloved rifles of all time. Due to its small size and lightweight, it can be used by anyone, from professional trappers to young individuals. The rifle was produced continuously until just before World War II. There were three models of the Stevens Favorite: Model 1889 (1889-1894), Model 1894 (1894-1912), and Model 1915 (1915-1935), each with several variations.
