The Stevens Model 520's development was rooted in Browning's 1903 patent, which introduced an internal hammer, locking-breech block, and a take-down design—innovations that greatly influenced the pump-action shotgun’s evolution. The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company seized upon Browning's design to fill a gap in their product lineup, capitalizing on the growing popularity of slide-actuated shotguns in the early 20th century. Despite a significant shift in production when the company was sold to New England Westinghouse in 1915, which resulted in a focus on military contracts for Mosin-Nagant rifles during World War I, the Stevens Model 520's legacy continued. After the war, the company was acquired by Savage Arms, which resumed full-scale production of civilian firearms. The Model 520 was eventually succeeded by the Model 520A in 1939, and the streamlined Model 620, which shared many internal features with the 520, was introduced in 1927. These models continued to evolve until the end of production in 1955. The Model 520's impact is also reflected in its various re-brands, such as the Ranger Model 30, Western Field Model 30, and J.C. Higgins “102.25,” demonstrating its enduring design and widespread use across different markets.
