Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this Belgium-made hammered side-by-side shotgun today for a penny start auction, this is the Janssen Sons & Co. "The Interchangeable!"

Markings: The left side plate is marked "JANSSEN & SONS Co", and the right is marked "THE INTERCHANGEABLE". The top of the rib is marked "BELGIUM LAMINATED BARRELS" and the top of the left barrel is marked "CHOKE BORE." The water table is marked "r" & "893" don't eh left and "A" on the right. The barrel flats are marked "12" with Belgium-proof stamps and the matching serial on the left.

"The Interchangable" was a trademark used on shotguns manufactured by Janssen, Sons and Company (Janssen, Fils & Cie) of Liege, Belgium from the 1880s to the early 1900s. This company produced a range of firearms, from economy-grade guns for export to high-grade models. "The Interchangeable" was one of many trademarks used by Janssen, Sons, and Company on inexpensive shotguns that were imported into the US for the Hardware and Mail Order Trade. However, it is important to note that most shotguns from this era were equipped with Damascus, Laminated Steel, or Twist Steel barrels and are therefore unsafe to use with modern ammunition. It is worth noting that there were five other Belgian manufacturers who used the word "Interchangeable" in some form as a trade name on shotguns besides Janssen, Sons, and Company. Unfortunately, in 1914, events in Europe disrupted and halted this industry. This particular shotgun seems to have had a long and useful lifespan. It has been altered to resemble a coach gun instead of a field gun and would make an excellent decoration in a man cave or barn. Alternatively, it could also serve as a valuable source of parts for another Janssen Sons & Co. Interchangeable.
