Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Japanese Arisaka training rifles were typically either modified or specially manufactured blank-firing versions of standard service rifles, initially based predominantly on the Type 38 platform. These trainers usually featured smoothbore barrels, while some rifles did have rifled barrels. Often, the training rifles had the Imperial Chrysanthemum and other standard receiver markings removed or obscured. In some cases, they were replaced with writing translating to “blank firing gun” or special school marks, and occasionally, only a serial number remained visible. Designed exclusively for drill and blank-fire use, they lacked the strength and proper chambering to safely handle live ammunition. As World War II progressed, training rifles began to incorporate design elements from the newer Type 99 rifle—such as longer front barrel bands and simplified breech openings—while often retaining key Type 38 components. This blend produced hybrid models combining features from both the Type 38 and Type 99. Generally crudely made and stripped of full combat functionality, these rifles served as cost-effective and safe training tools.

Collector accounts and historical records confirm that these trainers frequently appear with mixed Type 38 and Type 99 characteristics, reflecting the transitional evolution of Japanese service rifles and the practical demands of wartime military training programs. Overall, Arisaka training rifles represent a fascinating intersection of military necessity, resourcefulness, and adaptation during a period of intense conflict.
