Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Philadelphia Deringer was a small handgun designed by Henry Deringer (1786-1868) in the mid-19th century. It was produced from 1852 through 1868 and was a popular choice for concealed carry. The design was so successful that many competitors copied it, sometimes even copying the markings.

To load a Philadelphia Deringer, the user would typically fire a couple of percussion caps on the gun to dry out any residual moisture that could cause a misfire. They would then remove the remains of the last fired percussion cap and place the gun on its half-cock notch. Next, they would pour 15 to 25 grains (1 to 2 g) of black powder down the barrel and insert a lead ball, being careful to leave no air gap between the patched ball and the powder. This was to prevent the gun from exploding when fired. The patch on the ball kept it firmly lodged against the powder, preventing what was called a "short start" when the ball was dislodged from being firmly against the powder.
After placing a new percussion cap on the tube (nipple), the gun was loaded and ready to fire. The half-cock notch prevented the hammer from falling if the trigger was bumped accidentally. To fire the gun, the user would fully cock the hammer, aim, and squeeze the trigger. If the gun misfired, the user could fully re-cock the hammer and attempt to fire the gun again, or switch to a second Deringer. Accuracy was highly variable, as rear sights were less common and some Philadelphia Deringers had no sights at all, being intended for point-and-shoot use across short distances. Professional gamblers and others who carried regularly often fired and reloaded daily to decrease the chance of a misfire.
