Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Waffenfabrik Bern Karabiner Modell 1931 (K31) is widely regarded as one of the finest bolt-action military rifles of the 20th century, embodying the Swiss tradition of precision engineering and craftsmanship. Adopted in 1931 as the successor to the earlier Schmidt-Rubin straight-pull rifles, the K31 retained the straight-pull bolt action system but refined it for improved durability, reliability, and accuracy. Chambered in the powerful 7.5×55mm Swiss GP11 cartridge, the K31 was capable of exceptional accuracy, rivaling purpose-built target rifles of the same period. Unlike conventional turn-bolt rifles, its straight-pull action allowed the shooter to cycle the bolt quickly by simply pulling straight back and pushing forward, reducing movement and allowing faster follow-up shots. Swiss military doctrine emphasized marksmanship, and every conscript was issued a K31, which meant that these rifles were maintained with extraordinary care and often saw far less harsh field use compared to other nations’ service rifles. From a collector’s standpoint, the K31 stands out not only for its engineering but also for the unique cultural legacy tied to each rifle. Many K31s were issued with a soldier’s tag under the buttplate, containing the name and unit of the original Swiss conscript, which creates a tangible personal connection to history. The rifle’s fit and finish, including its beech or walnut stock, precise machining, and excellent trigger pull, highlight its dual purpose as both a military arm and a reflection of Swiss craftsmanship. Its reputation for accuracy, even with iron sights, has made it a favorite among surplus shooters and competitive marksmen alike. Today, the K31 is considered one of the most collectible and shootable surplus rifles, prized not only for its historical value but also for its continued performance on the range, demonstrating the enduring legacy of Swiss firearm design.
