Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the Second Sino-Japanese War and Second World War, the Empire of Japan used the Type 38 rifle as its primary bolt-action service rifle. The Imperial Japanese Army adopted the design in 1905, during the Meiji period's 38th year, which is why it is called the "Type 38." Although the 6.5×50mm Arisaka cartridge lacked power, the Type 38 rifle remained in use throughout the war, alongside the Type 99 rifle which partially replaced it. The Type 38 carbine was also introduced at the same time as the standard Type 38, intended for use by cavalry, engineers, and other roles where a full-sized rifle would be a hindrance. At various points, rifles were removed from military service and either sold to other countries or transferred to Japanese schools for use as training weapons. Typically, the chrysanthemum insignia on these rifles was overstamped with the Koishikawa (Tokyo) or Kokura Arsenal symbol, or a ring of small circles, to show that the rifle was no longer part of the Imperial Japanese Army’s inventory. Rifles given to schools often had an additional character stamped on the top of the receiver, placed between the chrysanthemum and the type designation characters. Many of these "school-marked" rifles also featured two or three zeros preceding the serial number. These rifles, once retired from military use, were repurposed for training police forces, paramilitary groups, and high school ROTC programs.
