Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Type 38 rifle, also known as sanhachi-shiki hoheiju, was a bolt-action service rifle primarily used by the Empire of Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. The rifle was designed in 1905 and adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in the 38th year of the Meiji period, hence the name "Type 38". Although it was only partially replaced with the Type 99 rifle during the war due to the lack of power in its 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka cartridge, both rifles were used until the end of the war.

In 1939, the Type 38 rifle was manufactured by several arsenals and had an overall cost of 75.9 yen per unit. By 1940, the Imperial Japanese Army had issued more than three million Type 38s. However, since the 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka cartridge was not as powerful as the ammunition used by other great powers in the war, a new generation of rifles was introduced in 1939 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. This new rifle, known as the Type 99 rifle, used the more powerful 7.7×58mm Arisaka cartridge, which was already in use with the Type 92 heavy machine gun and the Type 97 light machine gun. However, not all units received the new weapon, and the mixture of types with incompatible cartridges led to significant logistics issues during World War II.
