This versatility allows the Drilling to adapt to different hunting needs, making it a uniquely functional and flexible firearm platform.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Drillings, derived from the German word for “triplet,” are three-barreled firearms that became possible with the advent of breech-loading centerfire guns in the 19th century. These guns gained the most popularity in Germany and Austria, where overlapping hunting seasons created a demand for versatile firearms capable of handling various types of game. Though produced in many countries, including Belgium and Austria, the finest Drillings came from well-known gunmaking hubs such as Suhl, Zella-Mehlis, Liege, and Ferlach. These firearms were crafted by both established manufacturers and small independent gunsmiths, resulting in significant variation in quality and price. Many were marked only with the dealer’s name or not marked at all, making it difficult to trace their true origins.

The hammered Kruppscher Flussstahl drilling is a classic example of German firearm craftsmanship, blending elegance, utility, and robust engineering in a single versatile hunting gun. "Kruppscher Flussstahl" refers to the fluid steel developed by the renowned Krupp steelworks, prized for its strength and durability, making it an ideal material for firearm barrels. This drilling features a traditional hammer action, typically configured with two shotgun barrels over a rifled barrel, allowing hunters to adapt quickly to various game in the field. The hammered design not only adds an old-world charm but also offers the shooter manual control over the firing mechanism, a feature still appreciated by traditionalists. With its finely blued barrels, often chambered in popular European calibers like 16 gauge over 8x57JR or 9.3x72R, and fitted with a set trigger and automatic pop-up rear sight for the rifle barrel, the Kruppscher Flussstahl drilling is both a collector’s treasure and a testament to the enduring practicality of combination guns.
