Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I* rifle, manufactured in 1944 by Long Branch Arsenal in Canada, is a distinguished example of one of the most iconic bolt-action military rifles in history. Chambered in .303 British, this rifle embodies the battle-hardened reliability and craftsmanship that defined Commonwealth infantry weapons during the Second World War. This particular variant—the Mk I*—features a simplified bolt release mechanism for more efficient wartime production, yet retains the core strengths of the No. 4 series: a 25-inch barrel, smooth bolt-action cycling, and a 10-round detachable magazine. The barrel’s length contributes to excellent ballistic performance with the .303 cartridge, while the blade front sight and peep-hole rear aperture allow for precise, rapid target acquisition, even under stressful combat conditions.

Aesthetically and functionally, this rifle carries the rugged elegance typical of wartime-issued Enfields. It features a smooth hardwood full-length stock that provides balance and durability in the field, paired with a black metal finish that resists corrosion and reduces visual signature. The left side of the receiver is proudly marked “No. 4 MK I* – Long Branch 1944”, denoting its Canadian origin, while the right side bears the export marking “England”, common on rifles sent to other Commonwealth nations or repatriated to the UK after the war. The Lee-Enfield’s action is notable for its rear-locking bolt with helical lugs, allowing for rapid cycling without disrupting the shooter’s aim—an advantage that contributed to its legendary “mad minute” rate of fire. In the hands of a trained soldier, the Lee-Enfield was capable of delivering 20 to 30 aimed rounds per minute, making it the fastest-cycling bolt-action rifle of its era. The No. 4 Mk I* is more than just a firearm—it's a tangible connection to the soldiers of WWII and the evolution of 20th-century military arms. Its longevity, accuracy, and historical significance make it a treasured piece among collectors, historians, and marksmen alike.
