Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Lefever Nitro Special is a rugged and beloved American double-barrel shotgun that represents one of the great success stories of early 20th-century utilitarian gun making, combining solid craftsmanship, straightforward design, and dependable field performance in a package that has become a classic among hunters and collectors. Introduced in 1921 after Ithaca Gun Company acquired the Lefever Arms name, the Nitro Special was conceived as an affordable yet well-built side-by-side for the working sportsman, and its construction reflects that mission: the boxlock action is robust and simple, utilizing coil springs instead of the more delicate leaf springs found in higher-end doubles, while the frame is forged steel rather than the cast alternatives used by many competitors of the era. Offered in a variety of gauges—most commonly 12, 16, and 20, with some .410 examples produced—the shotgun typically features fluid-steel barrels proofed for modern smokeless loads, a significant advantage at a time when many older doubles were still built for black powder pressures. Its lines are understated yet handsome, with a straight-forward American walnut stock, modest checkering, and a color-case-hardened receiver that, when well preserved, displays attractive mottling characteristic of Ithaca’s early-century finishing work. The Nitro Special is known for its durability, tight lockup, and consistent reliability, making it a favorite for generations of upland hunters, clay shooters, and farmers who needed a dependable tool more than ornate embellishment. Even nearly a century after its introduction, surviving examples often remain mechanically sound, and the gun is appreciated today not only for its practical field qualities but also as a tangible piece of American gun making history from a time when strength, simplicity, and value were paramount.
