Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This finely crafted pair of mid-19th-century pistols exhibits features consistent with high-quality arms of the period. The swivel-mounted ramrods, lanyard loops on the pommels, and large caliber suggest they were built for serious use, while their matched configuration and fixed rear sights indicate they may also have been intended for dueling. Marked "FNI P LEPAGE MOUTIER A PARIS" on the barrels, the pistols were finished by the esteemed Parisian gunmaker LePage Moutier, who was active from the 1840s through the 1860s and renowned for crafting finely detailed percussion target and dueling pistols. Hallmarks of his work—such as the pairing of pistols numbered “1” and “2” on the upper tangs, rifled barrels with dovetailed blade front sights, and French gray finish—are all present on these pistols. The locks and furniture are richly engraved with scroll and border artwork, while the stocks feature incised scroll artwork and fluted wrists, reflecting a level of craftsmanship associated with presentation-grade firearms. These pistols are housed in a fitted wooden case, the silver lid plaque of which bears a partially defaced inscription that appears to read "Jean/Casablanca."

The silver escutcheons on the top of the wrists are engraved with the initials "JC" in Gothic-style script, adding a personal element. Accompanying the pistols are a variety of period accessories—including a wooden container, ball mold, screwdriver/nipple wrench, powder flask, and bore rod—all of which are consistent with documented LePage Moutier sets from the period. Together, the pistols and their accoutrements form a refined and historically rich presentation, emblematic of the high artistry and precision associated with 19th-century Parisian gunmaking.
