The Lyman Deerstalker is one of the company’s most recognizable traditional muzzleloaders, introduced in the late 1980s and produced well into the 2000s as part of Lyman’s effort to offer a reliable, affordable, and accurate side-lock rifle for modern black-powder hunters. Designed as a practical counterpart to Lyman’s more historically styled Great Plains Rifle, the Deerstalker incorporates classic Hawken-influenced architecture—walnut or hardwood stock, brass furniture, and hooked breech—while adopting updated features that make it especially suitable for contemporary field use. Available in both percussion and flintlock configurations and commonly chambered in .50 caliber, it offered a fast-handling 24" barrel, fiber-optic or adjustable iron sights, and an overall ruggedness that made it popular among hunters navigating thick timber or brush country.
Historically, Lyman built its reputation on sights and reloading equipment, but its mid-20th-century entry into the reproduction black-powder market helped reintroduce traditional muzzleloading to a new generation. The Deerstalker emerged as one of the brand’s dependable mid-priced models, blending period styling with practical enhancements like coil-spring locks, modern steel barrels, and optional factory bedding.
